IMPORTANT: USE A METRONOME!

Want to make your practice time more effective? Practice with a metronome. A metronome is a device that can be set to make a clicking sound at different rates of speed used to set the tempo for playing a musical piece. For example, if you set the metronome to 60, you will hear 60 clicks (beats) in every minute. If you set the metronome to 120, you will hear 120 clicks (beats) in every minute. So a setting of 120 is twice as fast as a setting of 60. The higher the number, the faster the tempo.

Essentially, a metronome helps the musician keep a steady beat. It's like having your Band Director in a box clapping the tempo for you! After more and more practice sessions with the metronome, you will know when you are right on the beat of the metronome because you will get the sensation of not hearing the metronome while you play! Essentially, your notes are replacing the metronome beats. This will happen but requires much patience/practice to achieve.

Click on this link for a FREE online metronome to use with every practice session! Remember, you should always practice in a place that is free from distractions, so no "instant messaging" while using your online metronome!

Current Assignments

Okay. It happens. "The dog ate it." "I have it here somewhere." "I forgot my backpack at school."

I have heard every excuse in the book. Bottom line is you don't have your homework. Well, say no more! Because you have such a wonderful Band Director, you can now go to the website and find your assignments. I can't promise that every assignment will be here. (You need to have some responsibility on your own.) But, hopefully, this will help you out in a pinch.

Check back here frequently for updates. Now... there's NO excuse!

Enrichment Help

Band at Riverside Middle School is more than a series of performances and rehearsals. It may appear that we are simply completing one event and immediately starting to prepare for the next. Although we do maintain a busy schedule, we must not forget that the most important reason for being in the RMS Band is to receive a quality music education. A higher learning is taking place while in band; thus, a “quality” music education means much more than performance preparation.

As a member of the RMS Band, students are required to complete Band Projects more commonly known as “Enrichment.” Students must earn a total of ten (10) Enrichment points per quarter to maintain their grade in Band. During the 1st and 3rd quarters, students will complete their Enrichment requirements by completing and in-depth Unit Study on one of the pieces we are preparing for the concert. During the 2nd and 4th quarters, students will complete Enrichment by choosing projects from the list below. Students also have the option of coming up with their own Enrichment project. However, this project must have Ms. Murphy’s approval before completion.

  • CD's of professional musicians playing your child's instrument.
What better way to get your child to understand what good practicing leads to. They can't make their instrument sound like it's supposed to if they don't know what they are aiming for. Provide some inspiration while also getting them to listen to music other than what's on the radio (yuck!).
Click on this link for some suggested listening.
  • Instrument upgrades.
Make your child sound better instantly by just making a simple upgrade in mouthpieces, reeds, etc.
Click on this link for some suggested upgrades.
  • Music Song Books.
Inspire your child to practice more by getting them some music that they are familiar with.
Happy shopping!

Band at East Providence High School

The East Providence High School Band has had a long tradition of excellence dating back to the 1950's with noted educator and band director, Stephen Farnum. We continue this tradition of excellence by incorporating the Nine National Standards of Music Education in every rehearsal and performance. Each ensemble has an active performance schedule allowing the students an opportunity to grow musically and otherwise through performance in music. It is our goal to create well rounded students through a study of music, and music performance, and to foster life long learning and reinforce positive life skills.
